Gerri Sayler's "Nascent," an ethereal, light-filled installation at Suyama Space on Second Avenue, instills a sense of hushed tranquility. Made entirely from hot glue, it features more than 2,000 long snowflake-like filaments that hang down from the ceiling. Some are shorter, some longer, with the differences forming inverted hills and valleys reminiscent of the Idaho landscape of the artist's home. Viewers can walk around under the filaments, creating an interactive environment that animates the senses and skews perception. My sculpture class went there on a cloudy day, but the woman who spoke to us about the installation said that on sunny days the installation is even more spectacular as the sunlight catches the filaments.

Aside from being impressed with the lustrous visual impact of this sculptural installation, I was also intrigued by the fact that it's not shown at a traditional "art showing" location - a gallery or museum. Instead, it's located in the central plaza of an architectural firm's offices. Suyama Peterson Deguchi is one of the "rock stars" of the Seattle architectural scene, and I'm glad they've set aside some space to showcase art. It's good for their business as well as for the Seattle art scene.
